BACKGROUND
The Expert meeting was conducted as a satellite meeting of the National Workshop which took theme: Child Growth & Micronutrient Deficiencies : New Initiatives for Developing Countries to Achieve MDGs, and covered the following topics:
- Retrospective view on child growth: lessons learned from programs to overcome under-nutrition in the developed countries
- Where do we go? (in relation to the situation in Indonesia)
- Implications for future programs

RECOMMENDATION
The Conclusions and Recommendations derived from the meeting :
- Stunting started in utero – Birth weight
- Growth faltering starts early in life
- Catch-up growth is invisible
- The long-term effect of growth retardation exists
- Positive Effect of multiple micronutrient supplementation and fortification (Ca, Fe, Zn) in early life:
- Stature in adult, birth weight of the next generation, reading scores, years of schooling and income
- Supplementation to young children (0-2 years) is not negatively affect future obesity
- Food Fortification is visible: technology is available for various carriers
- Focus on window of vulnerability group: pregnant women and child 0-2 years
- Posyandu should be re-activated effectively by emphasizing growth monitoring and action; prevent
- early growth retardation à POSYANDU : focus on 0-2 years, especially for the poor
- Improved infant and young child feeding : Support and promote breastfeeding with exclusive
- Breastfeeding in place; adequate, appropriate and timely complementary feeding
- Increase food Fortification intervention
- Increase Supplementation with multi-micronutrient, especially for the poor
- Strengthening public and private partnership on food approach
OUTPUT
The documentation of the meeting will be inserted to the Proceeding of the National Workshop on Food and Nutrition IX (WNPG), multiply in CDs and distributed to relevant institutions.
