One Day Seminar on Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics
"Nutrigenomics & Nutrigenetics in Indonesia: Linking Diverse Genetics with Nutrition to Improve Health & Welfare"
Saturday, November 5, 2016
Hotel Melia Purosani, Yogyakarta
Understanding the interaction of genetics and nutrition is an important foundation for health and disease prevention. Nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics science have great potentials to improve human health and welfare, as well as to prevent disease, at individual, genetic subgroup and population levels. Although the application of this type of science in Indonesia is still limited, and not many have been trained in the numerous disciplines used in this research field, however, Indonesian researchers and health professionals have great potentials to develop and be the leading scientists in this field. In particular because of the existence of the unique interaction between the diverse genetic background and the various traditional food, found only in the Indonesian population. Therefore, improving the knowledge of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics from an Indonesian perspective, suitable for the Indonesian many ethnic groups and in line with the local wisdom, is essential.
On the 5th November 2016, a One Day Seminar on Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics with the theme: Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics in Indonesia: linking diverse genetics with nutrition to improve health and welfare was held by the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, the Faculty of Medicine, Gajahmada University, and the Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University in Melia Purosani Hotel, Yogyakarta. The objectives of this seminar were the following:
The Seminar was attended by 46 participants from several provinces in Indonesia, representing universities, research institutions, governments and research foundation. A total of 16 conference papers were presented by researchers and health professionals in this seminar.
This seminar met its objectives in providing opportunities to foster the networking among Indonesian scientists, as well as to share their perspectives, address challenges, discuss strategies, and develop collaborative programs in nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics research fields. The participants were encouraged to remain in contact and exchange information related to protocols, troubleshooting, and collaboration opportunities. In order to facilitate communications and collaborations amongst researchers and health professionals working in this field in Indonesia, it was decided to establish an Indonesian Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics Society.
